Low-NOx era for Steelman Industries. Burn-off ovens using swrl‑R burners provided by Plum Combustion

July 15, 2015

Steelman industries of Kilgore, Tx. has taken the next step towards more eco-friendly ovens and staying ahead of the environmental regulatory curve with the implementation of the new swrl‑R series of low-NOx burners from Plum Combustion (Atlanta, Ga.). The low emissions of the burners qualified Steelman's products for deployment to California markets. Due to the adaptable nature of the swrl‑R design, the installation was made painless, and paved the way for swrl‑R series of burners on future products with no changes/modifications to existing oven designs or controls.

The integration of the swrl‑R burners to the Steelman product was carried out by a group of experts and technicians pulled from both the Plum Combustion and Steelman teams. This installation was a result of successful previous demonstration of a pair of 1MBTUH/hr burners provided by Plum combustion for testing on one of Steelman's test furnaces. The knowledge gained during this session translated into shorter testing time and faster shipping of the above mentioned pilot ovens

Plum Combustion swrl‑R Goes to the Field on Steelman Burn Off Ovens

March 6, 2015

Atlanta, GA - In tests performed on a burn off oven at Steelman Industrial Ovens in Kilgore, Texas, Plum Combustion's new swrl‑R burner readily met California's challenging NOx and CO emissions limits. At the conclusion of these tests, Carlton Mann, Steelman's product manager, commented: "I can't wait to install the Swrl-R burners in our ovens".

According to Ben Zinn, CEO of the company, the introduction of Plum Combustion's low-NOx, swrl‑R burners to the marketplace will allow industrial ovens, furnaces and other heating processes to meet emissions requirements even in the most stringent environments. Our burners use R, our proprietary technology. R provides significantly lower emissions and higher efficiency than any other competing product. Plum Combustion expects to have its first swrl‑R burner in operation in the field by mid-2015.

Plum Combustion, founded in 2005 by faculty members from the world renowned Ben T. Zinn Combustion Laboratory at Georgia Tech, develops solutions to improve the performance and operability of combustion systems employed in a wide range of applications.

Ultra Low-NOx Radiant Burner Patent Awarded
When the standards impose <20ppm NOx, Plum Combustion answer is a burner with <15ppm NOx

June 10, 2014

Atlanta, GA - - Plum Combustion has received the first patent for a new range of burners. These burners, ultra-low NOx natural draft radiant burners that are suitable for water heaters, demonstrate that it is possible to obtain emissions well below new federal standards without increasing costs of water heaters. Besides being an inexpensive, the radiant burners require minimum changes to a water heater as they are easy to retrofit in current designs.

“I am a very proud man; both the team and the burner did an amazing job to get this patent assigned” said Ben Zinn, CEO of Plum Combustion, with which he referred to the obtained emissions. Since the guidelines have already been adopted by the state of California which requires that all installed water heaters should emit no more than 20 ppm NOx corrected to 3% O2 by 2015, “we have a winner!”.

In preparation of integration of the ultra low NOx burner to the field, tests of the prototype included downdraft and updraft per ANSI Z21.10.3 section 2.20 have been performed and didn't prove to be a challenge to it. Now that the patent has been received, the next step is to develop more sizes to span the whole range of small 25 gallon residential to large 200 gallon commercial water heaters. Since the patent has been rewarded, this technology is available for licensing.

Ultra Low-NOx Water Heater in Everybody's Basement
When the standards impose <20ppm NOx, Plum Combustion answer is a burner with <15ppm NOx

October 10, 2013

Atlanta, GA - Plum Combustion has developed an ultra-low NOx natural draft radiant burner that is suitable for water heaters. The corrected NOx emissions of this burner are well below 15 ppm for water heater power inputs in the 60,000 to 90,000 BTU/hr range (17.5-26 kW). To reach these ultra-low NOx emissions, the burner employs an advanced injection scheme that produces controlled air-fuel mixing and a low NOx combustion mode. The integrated burner-water heater system operates very stable over the whole range of indicated power inputs and does so very quietly.

In 2015 the new federal minimum standard for commercial and residential water heaters will become effective nationwide. These guidelines have already been adopted by the state of California which requires that all installed water heaters should emit no more than 20 ppm NOx corrected to 3% O2 by 2015. Plum Combustion has come up with a simple but elegant solution which retrofits to existing water heaters and will provide everybody to have hot water with low emissions in their home.

Tests of the prototype included downdraft and updraft per ANSI Z21.10.3 section 2.20. The technology is patented and the following steps towards production have been taken; one of which is scaling the burner to fit smaller water heaters.

This technology is available for licensing.
